Butchering a Turkey

Last week we said good bye to our friend the turkey. This was my first experience preparing a turkey, but I think it went quite well. Thanks to a great husband who was willing to do all the dirty work we had the turkey in the freezer in just a few hours.

Step 1:Be Prepared before you start.

Step 2: Catch the Turkey (the rope was really unnecessary but J5 insisted, luckily the turkey was very good natured).

Step 3:Hang the turkey upside down by her feet.

Step 4:Using a small rope or piece of twine tie a rock to the turkeys head to hold the neck down straight.

Step 5:(This is the step where the kids and I went to visit the cows) Using a very sharp knife, remove the head.

Step 6:Remove the turkeys feathers (doing this immediately will cause the feathers to come out much quicker and cleaner than if you wait). If the feathers do not remove well you may have to boil the turkey for a minute to loosen the feathers.

Step 7:Remove the wings.

Step 8: Starting at the back end remove all the inside, including the neck.

Step 9:Clean off the body and rinse out the inside to prepare for the freezer.

Step 10: Pat dry

Step 11: Wrap like the most awkward birthday present you've ever wrapped.

Step 12: Freeze till Thanksgiving!
